Can You Use a Hydraulic Hose for Natural Gas?

Hydraulic hoses have excellent features that make them suitable for many pneumatic applications. Perhaps, they are also ideal for natural gas. But can you use a hydraulic hose for natural gas?

Hydraulic hoses can be used temporarily for natural gas at a gaseous state. But for liquid natural gas, never use hydraulic hoses. Their poor material quickly reacts with the liquid natural gas and increases the risk of leakage and fire.

In this blog, you will elaborate on why a hydraulic hose is unsuitable for natural gas.

What Is a Hydraulic Hose? Where Is a Hydraulic Hose Used?

Hydraulic hoses are special types used for different hydraulic applications in industrial and commercial settings. They are constructed from Teflon, rubber, and thermoplastic, which makes them durable and robust.

A hydraulic hose’s purpose is to handle the fluid flow from one component to another. Hydraulic hoses are used in a wide range of applications.

Construction, logistics, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, automotive, and agriculture are a few major industries where hydraulic hoses are used.

Can You Use a Hydraulic Hose for Natural Gas?

Regarding the best-recommended hose for natural gas, I will not recommend a hydraulic hose for natural gas. Some users claim that standard hydraulic hoses are made of NBR, offering excellent natural gas strength.

But the problem is that NBR only offers strength against natural gas in the Gaseous state. If natural gas is in liquid form, standard hose, even NBR made, are also not a good choice. NBR is reactive to liquid natural gas; ultimately, you will collect residuals of rubber in hose fluid. It also enhances the chances of leakages and fire risks.

Only the NL 1770 hose is recommended for natural gas in the Gaseous or liquid state. At the barbecues, space heaters, and camping equipment, only NL 1770 hose is used to deliver natural gas.

So, avoiding using the hydraulic hose for natural gas is better, especially when handling natural gas in liquid form. Otherwise, you will always be at high risk.

Final Verdict

Hydraulic hoses can be cheap and easy to install. But for natural gas, you will always be at risk of leakage and fire. It is better to use approved hoses for a safe solution.

  1. I appreciate your warning when you said not to use hydraulic hoses for natural gases since this will only increase the risk of leakage and fire, so it’s best to only use them in compatible hydraulic applications in industrial and commercial settings. I imagine if you work for a wastewater plant, it would help to have a custom hydraulic hose that can handle the pressure and flow of the fluids effectively and efficiently. I’ll be sure to keep this in mind if I ever need to get a hose for hydraulic application in the future.
